David Alpert, CEO of Skybound, Discusses ‘The Walking Dead’ Ratings

For some, The Walking Dead is still a series that absolutely can’t be missed. When the series is in season, they carve out the hour on Sunday nights and turn off any opportunity for interruptions. For others, that need to cancel life on Sunday evenings isn’t as urgent as it once was. Instead, they record the show to watch it later and avoid the internet because of spoilers.

As is to be expected, ratings for the series aren’t as high as they were in the beginning. However, this has caused quite a lot of chatter in the fan base, and in the pop culture realm as a whole. Is the series losing its touch? Or are fans less worried about seeing everything first or right away?

The CEO of Skybound Entertainment and producer on The Walking Dead, David Alpert, has discussed the talked about rating decline for The Walking Dead‘s season 8. He said the following in a recent interview with Variety.

“I don’t think in any way the brand has lost its relevance in general, I think we’re just seeing a decline in urgency across all media to consume something at a specific time.”

While it is true that fans don’t always have time to sit in front of a television when their favorite show comes on, the timing seems to be what’s causing the conversation. Is it that fans are getting busy and relying on the ability to watch episodes later or is it the direction in which the show has traveled over the last two seasons?

For us, it’s more than a series. The Walking Dead is a large part of who we are as a company and as individuals. Whether we agree with every decision or not, we’re fans and as fans, we tune in to enjoy the content we can, get emotional about the content we can’t – and appreciate the story being told by those associated with the series.

What about you? Are you in it until the end with The Walking Dead or have you become an occasional viewer?
