Danai Gurira Was “Devastated” by ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 8 Carl Twist

Spoiler Alert!  The following contains spoilers from season 8 of The Walking Dead.

Danai Gurira Was "Devastated" by 'The Walking Dead' Season 8 Carl Twist

We are just over one week away from the moment that every fan of The Walking Dead television series is dreading.  In the last episode before the midseason break, fans were shocked to learn that Carl Grimes (played by Chandler Riggs) had been bitten by a walker on the side of his torso – an injury there is no coming back from.  In the midseason premiere, it has been confirmed that Carl will succumb to his injuries in a shocking twist and break away from the comic book storylines.

Fans and cast members alike have been struggling to deal with surprising news and series star Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne on the show, is the latest to weigh in on the twist of events.  In a recent interview, she told Huffington Post:

“I got a little depressed for a while. Straight up,” the actress said. “You’re in the story. You’re in it, and you’re also in a family. It was hard.”

Carl and Michonne have always had a special bond on the series.  The two characters understand each other and seem to bring each other hope.  Naturally, Carl’s death is going to be especially tragic for Michonne.  Gurira said:

“Carl and Chandler are a blessing to Michonne and to Danai, you know what I mean? I adore Chandler, and [for] Michonne, Carl is her healer. Everything she and Rick do is to protect Carl, so this is kind of the worst nightmare realized for him to reveal [the bite] at the end of the last episode.”

So how is Michonne going to react when that dreaded moment finally comes?  We will have to wait and see but, Gurira said both she and her character were left devastated by Carl’s death.  Gurira said:

“These are very resourceful people who do everything they can,” she added. “Rick and Michonne don’t really stop easily. What do you do when that’s what you’re facing? So, yeah, I was devastated. Michonne was devastated.”

The midseason premiere will reveal all.  The episode is titled Honor and will have an extended runtime clocking in at 82-minutes long.  The episode is directed by Greg Nicotero with an official synopsis which reads:

”Rick faces new difficulties after a battle. Meanwhile, the fight continues in other communities as core members face hard decisions.”

The Walking Dead was recently renewed for a 9th season at AMC with a brand new showrunner Angela Kang at the helm. The series will return for the second half of season 8 starting on February 25th at 9 PM EST on AMC.
