‘Child’s Play’ Remake in the Works

The Child’s Play franchise is about to be reborn! There is a whole new movie in the works centered around everyone’s favorite, iconic murderous doll, Chucky.

It was announced on Friday that MGM is remaking the classic 1980s horror movie Child’s Play with Norwegian director Lars Klevberg. The studio is reportedly fast-tracking the film which is now rapidly heading towards production this September. The film’s script was written by Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury 2).

While plot details are, of course, not being officially disclosed, according to Collider, the remake will be a new, fresh take on the classic story of a doll possessed by a serial killer. The remake is said to be set in contemporary times and would follow a group of kids as they battle a technologically-advanced demon doll. While these plot details have yet to be confirmed by MGM, if true, adding technological advancements to an already demonically possessed doll could certainly take the Chucky character to new levels which have never been seen before. That being said, we’re really not sure how we feel about this remake.

At this time, there have been no casting announcements so it’s unclear if Brad Dourif would be returning to voice the demonic doll or if the Chucky character will be taking on a completely different persona. Dourif is said to be voicing the Good Guy doll in the upcoming Child’s Play television series which original film creator Don Mancini teased via his Twitter account.

The Child’s Play franchise currently consists of 7 feature films, each one evolving the characters more and more. The latest film in the franchise, Cult of Chucky clearly displays the continued evolvement and growth of Chucky creator Don Mancini (and the Chucky character). Mancini expertly combines horror with humor and beautifully poetic cinematography shots with old-school gore making this film an enjoyable ride for any fan of the franchise. If you haven’t watched Cult of Chucky yet, you HAVE to see it. It’s amazing! Also, check out our interview with Mancini, Douriff and the cast of the film from last year’s NYCC right HERE.
