James Cameron Stands By “Titanic” Ending

It was 20 years ago that Titanic sailed into our hearts and made superstars out of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. It also brought about a highly intense debate: whether or not Jack and Rose could both fit on the door at the end to save both of their lives.

Posts have floated around the Internet showing exactly how the two could have positioned their bodies in order to both fit and, as a result, survive. Mythbusters even went as far as to test the waters, so to speak, on the whole ordeal. They gathered that it would have been possible for the two to fit on the door and combat hypothermia.

Now, director James Cameron is speaking out on the situation, standing by his creative decision. In a recent interview with The Daily Beast, Cameron was posed with the assertion that it was possible for Jack to survive.

“Look, it’s very, very simple: you read page 147 of the script and it says, “Jack gets off the board and gives his place to her so that she can survive.” It’s that simple,” Cameron said.

He then goes on to explain that, in order for Mythbusters’ claim to be true, Jack would have had to take both his and Rose’s life vests off, swim under the door and give it some pull so that it wouldn’t give out and tip over once they were both on it. Doing all of this, partially underwear, in 28 degree water would take five to ten minutes and would have been just as likely to kill him.

“They’re fun guys and I loved doing that show with them, but they’re full of shit,” Cameron said of working with Mythbusters.

What do you think about this (almost) two-decade long debate?
