Yellowstone Future Uncertain as Spinoff With Matthew McConaughey is Moving Forward

The future of the Yellowstone franchise is uncertain, with reports suggesting that the flagship series could be ending upon the exit of series star Kevin Costner. However, a new spinoff series with Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey could keep the franchise alive.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan confirmed that he is developing a new series with McConaughey in the lead role. The eventual spinoff, which Sheridan has only figured out “the broadest strokes” of, will have Yellowstone in the title, and will “lean heavily” on a new locale and cast.

Sheridan said that he and McConaughey have been discussing the possibility of a collaboration for years, and that McConaughey was a natural fit for the role. “He seems like a natural fit,” Sheridan said. “We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it. He was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And by ‘that’ he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do.'”

Sheridan also said that the spinoff would be different from the current Yellowstone series in terms of its setting and tone. “My idea of a spinoff is the same as my idea of a prequel – read into that what you will,” Sheridan said. “There are lots of places where a way of life that existed for 150 years is slamming against a new way of life, but the challenges are completely different. There are a lot of places you can tell this story.”

The future of the Yellowstone franchise remains uncertain, but the development of a new spinoff series with Matthew McConaughey is a promising sign for fans of the show. It remains to be seen whether Costner will continue to star in the flagship series, but the spinoff could provide a way for the franchise to continue even if he does not.
