What to Watch: Valentine’s Day Edition

Happy Valentine’s Day lovelies!
In this special edition of “What to Watch,” I’ve scoured the web looking for the top rated romantic films ever! Now I know that list can go on and on and on but I think I’ve narrowed it down to a solid 5. Just a little something for you and your Valentine, whether it’s your significant other, your pet, your glass (bottle) of wine or your job. Because hey! It’s still Tuesday right?
Or if you’re like me and your SO is sick and you’re celebrating V-Day on another day, these films will still make you feel good.
Anyway, on to the top 5!
5. Titanic (1997)
Sure tons of people die in the end and Rose could’ve totally saved Jack, but this still counts as a romance. Think about it. Boy, down on his luck meets a pretty lady and they fall in love despite their differences in the middle of the ocean all while Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On plays in the background. And Rose chooses Jack over her fiance and wealth. And my personal favorite line from Rose to Cal as the ship is sinking “I’d rather be his whore than your wife.” Ouch.
4. Love Actually (2003)
Now this is technically a Christmas film but it centers around love. And a brilliant ensemble of actors like Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Bill Nighy, Keira Knightley, I could go on and on. Watch Hugh Grant dance, learn that lobsters were in fact present at the birth of Christ and laugh as Collin’s quest to Wisconsin turns out surprisingly well. Also catch a glimpse at a young Andrew Lincoln, for those of you Walking Dead fans. Throughout the intertwining story lines and British humor… Love truly is all around.
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Joel and Clementine decide to have their memories erased when their relationship goes under. After the procedure, they meet and fall in love all over again. It takes place mostly in Joel’s mind as he tries to preserve the memories. This film definitely proved that Jim Carrey can act and that Kate Winslet looks good in any hair color. But overall this film is touching and quietly romantic. It gives these two characters the chance to start over and remember, despite having their memories erased, why they loved each other in the first place.
2. Loving (2016)
This films chronicles the struggles of an interracial couple in the late 1950’s. The Loving family faced legal trouble just for being married and their case made it all the way to the Supreme Court, eventually ending criminal judgement on interracial marriage. This film is still new but the topic isn’t. This film is based off of a real couple, Mildred and Richard Loving, and a real court case, Loving V Virginia.
1. Anything by Nicholas Sparks
And I mean anything. The Notebook, Dear John, A Walk to Remember, The Last Song, The Choice, Safe Haven, etc… all of these films are romantic, heartfelt, sometimes heartbreaking but above all, they are a roller-coaster of emotions and that is kind of what true love is like. A roller-coaster. And in all honesty, there are enough of these films to last you the whole day! So go ahead and start the marathon early, just remember to grab the tissues.
