What does the Disney/Fox Merger Mean for R-Rated Marvel Movies?

Over the past year and a half, Marvel movies recently opened up the door to the R-Rated world with films like Deadpool and Logan hitting the big screens. Now that Disney has officially acquired 21st Century Fox, we will see a whole new world of Marvel now that selected characters will officially be able to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of those characters, being our ever so favorite snarky and sassy hero – Deadpool.
Deadpool completely dominated the box office when it was released in February 2016 grossing approximately $783.1 Million Dollars. Fans were especially in love with the fact that it was entirely a more ‘adult’ tone of a film, and the humor behind it was classic Deadpool.
The question is, now that Disney has officially merged with 21st Century Fox… what will become of our R-Rated Superhero films? Fans have expressed some concerns that Disney’s family-friendly brand will change the adult-themed comic book movies. However, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld doesn’t seem to share that same concern.
In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, he expressed his thoughts on the matter:
“[Disney CEO] Bob Iger didn’t deliver this unprecedented level of historic success for Disney by accident. This man gets it. He understands the culture and more importantly he understands the concerns of the fans. Addressing the Deadpool issue right out of the gate gets high marks and in all honesty, why would they mess with the success that Ryan Reynolds has achieved as Deadpool? The next person I encounter that tells me they want a neutered version of Ryan’s Deadpool will be the first person to express that to me. So smart of Iger to lay that foundation of trust and I for one am so appreciative. It definitely alleviated a concerned Deadpool base.”
Essentially, fans of Deadpool need not worry. We will still be getting to see our favorite ‘merc with the mouth’ just as he is right now. Disney CEO Bob Iger has addressed the future of Deadpool, confirming Fox’s film franchise will remain R-rated following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
“It [Deadpool] clearly has been and will be Marvel branded. But we think there might be an opportunity for a Marvel-R brand for something like Deadpool. As long as we let the audiences know what’s coming, we think we can manage that fine,”
Currently, Ryan Reynolds is working on the Deadpool sequel which will hit theaters on May 31, 2018.
