If we’ve learned anything from the incredible brilliance of Kermit D. Frog, we’ve learned that, “it’s not easy being green.” Clearly, that’s also true in other galaxies!
Actress Zoe Saldana, who plays the role of Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, shared a little behind the scenes glimpse into what it takes to transform into her role. On Twitter, she shared a 38 second time-lapse video clip of her entire transformation.
A team of make up professionals first start by placing a prosthetic cap over her hair and being to build out the signature cheek bone structure of Gamora with more prosthetics. While one make up artist then focuses on her facial features, a second artist begins transforming her skin into a green pigment. This involves a lot of careful painting followed by drying with the use of a tiny hair dryer followed again by a lot of painting and so on and so on. Once Saldana is successfully dyed green, the make up artists begin on the detailing of her features. It’s really ridiculously impressive! Check it out:

Though the clip is a super quick 38 second video, Saldana says the entire process takes a whopping 3 hours to complete! That’s a pretty huge chuck of time however, according to Nerdist, not quite the longest amount of time spent in a make up chair. For his transformation into Edna Turnblad for Hairspray Live!, John Travolta spent over four hours in the makeup chair! Bringing it back to Guardians, though, Dave Bautista spends around five hours in makeup for his transform into Drax.
The time spent in that make up chair sure is worth it! Zoe Saldana looks GREAT and as authentic as a green, alien-ish human can look. Am I right?
What do you think of the super cool time-lapse video? If you could see how a transformation, in progression, of any make up job in film, which one would you want to see happen? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
