The Walking Dead‘s Tom Payne is officially done with the zombie apocalypse, but now he’s stepping into battle a whole different kind of monster; serial killers. The first trailer for Payne’s new series Prodigal Son dropped during Fox’s annual TV upfronts on Monday, and we’re already hooked.

Payne plays the role of Malcolm Bright, son of a convicted infamous serial killer. Bright’s dysfunctional upbringings have given him the gift to understand a crime scene better than anyone else in the business. He’s the perfect criminal profiler with a dark past.

The first trailer introduces viewers to Bright, his serial killer father known as The Surgeon (played by Michael Sheen), his NYPD partner played by Lou Diamond Phillips and others. Check out the dramatic first teaser for Prodigal Son below.

Prodigal Son will follow “Bright (Payne), the son of a notorious serial killer called The Surgeon who understands how killers think. The criminal psychologist uses his skills to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers while balancing his manipulative mother (Bellamy), annoyingly normal sister, and a homicidal father (Sheen) still looking to bond with his prodigal son.”

The role of Malcolm Bright was initially supposed to be played by Iron Fist‘s Finn Jones. However, Jones ended up leaving reportedly due to timing issues with his contract. Payne had reportedly previously tested for the role and was able to step in rather quickly. In addition to Payne, Sheen, and Phillips, other cast members for Prodigal Son include Bellamy Young, Aurora Perrineau, and Frank Harts.

The pilot is written by Chris Fedak (Legends of Tomorrow) and Sam Sklaver (Deception) and directed by Lee Toland Krieger. Fedak, Sklaver and Krieger will also executive produce along with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Prods.
