WATCH: New Featurette Explores the Groundbreaking Technology Behind ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’

The next installment of The Planet of the Apes franchise is due out next month and, based on the previews and trailers that we’ve seen so far, it looks incredible!  In order to bring a story such as this one to life, filmmakers need to use the newest and best technology and techniques in order to make their characters seem realistic and human-like while, of course, still looking like apes.  This is no easy task but, the folks behind War for the Planet of the Apes makes this process look seamless.

In a new featurette just released on Wednesday, audiences get a behind the scenes look at the amazing performance delivered by the acclaimed motion capture actor Andy Serkis.  Serkis was the stand-in motion actor for the lead ape character Caesar.  However, as shown in the below featurette, Serkis’ role, and the role of other motion capture actors, is not simply as easy as standing in for the as a reference point for computer generated editing.  Serkis fully embodied the role of Caesar and was responsible for bringing all the emotion of the character to life.

After the scenes were shot with Serkis and the other actors wearing grey body suits and point markings, it was then up the technology and talent of the folks over at Weta Digital to fill in the characters’ physical appearances.  Weta artist used some of the most advanced techniques known within the film industry to bring this film to life.  Check out the super cool featurette below:

War for the Planet of the Apes, is directed by Matt Reeves and stars Andy Serkis, Judy Greer, Steve Zahn, Woody Harrelson, Max Lloyd-Jones and more. The film will be swinging into theaters on July 14, 2017.
