The DGA awards are coming up and it looks like WandaVision is nominated for a DGA. As if that weren’t exciting enough The Mandalorian is also nominated, which is really cool. That means both huge Disney+ series are being nominated and if we’re lucky maybe they’ll even win! Matt Shakman was nominated in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement for WandaVision. Jon Favreau was nominated as well for The Mandalorian.
Shakman will be fighting against Susanne Bier (The Undoing, HBO), Scott Frank (The Queen’s Gambit, Netflix), Thomas Kail (Hamilton, Disney+), and Lynn Shelton (Little Fires Everywhere, “Find a Way”, Hulu) to see if WandaVision can come out on top, which I’m sure fans are hoping for. Meanwhile, The Mandalorian will have to contend with Jason Bateman (Ozark, “Wartime”, Netflix), Vince Gilligan (Better Call Saul, “Bagman”, AMC), Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland, “Prisoners of War”, Showtime), and Julie Anne Robinson (Bridgerton, “Diamond of the First Water”, Netflix). I think The Mandalorian has this one in the bag though, because how could you possibly vote against Baby Yoda. Sorry, I meant Grogu of course.
The 73rd annual DGA’s will be taking place on April 10, and people only had until February 28 to get their nominations in, meaning at this point it’s too late. There are still not details about the actual ceremony, and who knows what we can expect considering the fact that we’re still in a pandemic. Over 18,000 members will vote to decide the fate of WandaVision and The Mandalorian. Sure, that’s not the whole point of the awards but for all intents and purposes, it is for me.
Whether or not the two Disney+ shows will win is, in all honesty, actually completely up in the air. I will say that what both shows have accomplished is incredibly impressive, since they don’t have anywhere near the resources that their respective film franchises do.
