Vin Diesel Talks Voicing Baby Groot in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’

Any Guardians of the Galaxy fan knows that the low, booming voice of the gentle giant Groot belongs to none other Fast and the Furious franchise star Vin Diesel.  Diesel’s natural speaking voice is low, gritty and fits perfectly with the massive Groot character.  But what happens now that we will have Baby Groot in the upcoming highly anticipated release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2?  Not only has Groot shrunken in size but, his voice has become significantly higher.

Fans might be surprised to learn that, even though Groot’s voice has been raised a few octaves, the man behind the plant is still Diesel.  And, apparently, according to writer/director James Gunn, minimal audio processing was used in order to reach that high, pip-squeaky vocal range.  Of their use of audio processing, Gunn said:

“Very little, very little.  I mean, there’s a tiny amount of processing that we do on a few of our characters, but it’s very little. It’s mostly just Vin’s voice. He’s able to, you know, speak in a much higher register than he normally does.”

Can you all just take a moment to picture muscle man Vin Diesel speaking in that high of a range?  Gunn continues:

“Listen, yeah, Vin’s an actor!  One of the reasons I was interested in working with Vin is I like Vin’s early [work], when I first saw Vin come around in movies like Boiler Room. He’s a real actor! He’s become this sort of larger-than-life action figure. But he’s actually are a real actor who can do a lot of different things. I’d love to see him take on some more difficult roles in his career, because I think he’s more than capable of doing that.”

Gunn, rightfully so, has a lot of faith in Diesel and, as we can see from the first film, he was perfect for that role.  Diesel himself has said that, even though the character’s vocabulary is limited, he has felt a connection to Groot and enjoys bringing a different dynamic to the character this time around.  Diesel said:

“He has always had an innocence but, this time, he has a fun a certain naive aspect because he really is just a baby. That was so fun to play. Groot is such a fascinating character on so many levels. For this installment I needed to not only pitch up the performance, I needed to embed even more wonder than he usually possesses… and he always has a wonder about him already. So proud of the character and what James Gunn has done with him.”

We here at Fan Fest News LOVE Baby Groot and can’t wait to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when it comes out in theaters on May 5th.
