Trailer for the newest Daphne du Maurier adaptation ‘My Cousin Rachel’ is Breathtaking

For those of you that like to read, check out anything you can by Daphne du Maurier. The acclaimed author of over 25 novels from the 1930s to the 1970s, her books are works of art to be savored. At least they were for me. My Cousin Rachel, the upcoming movie from Fox Searchlight, will be adapted from the gothic romance novel of the same name.

In this beautiful, moody period piece, we meet a young Englishman named Philip Ashley, who inherits his cousin and guardian Ambrose’s estate in Cornwall. Ambrose, who raised the orphaned Philip as his own son, has died in Italy. Philip, the heir to Ambrose’s beautiful estate, is crushed that the man he loved died far from home, but he is also suspicious. While in Italy, Ambrose fell in love with Rachel, a beautiful beguiling woman. But the final, brief letters Ambrose wrote hint that his love had turned to paranoia and he feared for his life.

Now Rachel has arrived at Philip’s newly inherited estate. Could this beautiful woman, who seems to genuinely share Philip’s grief at Ambrose’s death, really be as horrible as Philip imagines? Philip soon finds himself falling in love with Rachel, but his feelings are complicated when evidence suggests that she murdered Ambrose, and is only showing an interest in Philip to steal his inheritance.

Rachel Weisz (The Mummy) and Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games) star in the adaptation of the 1951 novel by Miss Du Maurier, who is most famous for writing Rebecca and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 cult hit The Birds. A lesser known work, the last time My Cousin Rachel made it to the big screen was in 1952, starring Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton and was nominated for four Oscars.

The trailer shows a movie that is breathtaking and full of atmosphere. It looks as though audiences will feel like they have stepped back in time. I am looking forward to seeing My Cousin Rachel, it was an amazing book. Check out the trailer for yourself.
