‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Dethrones Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ as Fifth Highest-Grossing Movie Ever

Over the long Labor Day weekend, Top Gun: Maverick raced past Black Panther at the box office.

With $1.4 billion in global box office, Tom Cruise’s sequel took the top spot this weekend over Sony’s re-release of Spider-Man: No Way Home – The More Fun Stuff Version, adding another $7.9 million to its $1.4 billion worldwide total according to Deadline. Maverick has now amassed a total of $700.8 million at the domestic box office, surpassing Disney and Marvel Studios’ Black Panther and becoming the fifth-highest grossing film ever there .

The Paramount Pictures blockbuster is now in the top five best domestic earners of all time, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($936m), Avengers: Endgame​ ($858m) Spider-Man: No Way Home ($811m).

With a record-breaking box office run and another 10.5 million admissions sold over the three-day Labor Day Weekend, the Top Gun sequel was declared the summer’s blockbuster with a massive ticket-selling streak. Discounted $3 tickets given as part of National Cinema Day aided Maverick’s success this weekend.

Since opening in theaters on May 27, this blockbuster has steadily added to its $1.4 billion global haul. After beating Disney’s 2007 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Top Gun 2 took the record for best-ever 4-day Memorial Day Weekend box office with $160.5 million.
