Top 5 Inspirational Movie Speeches
It’s that time in the movie when all hope seems lost and there’s no chance of success. But then a character gets up and delivers a speech that changes everything. There are numerous great inspirational speeches throughout cinematic history that resonate with the audience, whether they speak of courage, respect, unity, being true to oneself, or never giving up. Below are five powerful speeches that are guaranteed to inspire.
5. Coach Herman Boone – Remember the Titans (2000)
Based on true events in 1971 when tensions were high due to desegregation, Coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) tries to unite his team and teach them to look beyond the color of their skin. During a grueling training camp, the team takes a run to Gettysburg where Coach Boone delivers a speech asking them to take a lesson from the dead, who fought the same battle that’s still going on, so that they don’t tear each other apart.
4. Rocky Balboa – Rock Balboa (2006)
A great moment from father to son, but the words of Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) apply to everyone. Life is tough, but you have the power to control your own destiny. You might get knocked down and want to give in to the pressures of life, but you can’t. Rocky says it best: “But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”
3. Aragorn – Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
This is the moment when Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) fully embraces his destiny and becomes a king. Leading a small and battle-worn army against the hordes of Mordor in order to bide time for his friends to destroy the ring, he knows that the chance of survival is slim. They all know it. But his words spur them forward, giving them the strength and courage to face certain death.
2. William Wallace – Braveheart (1995)
Another speech where an army is facing insurmountable odds. William Wallace (Mel Gibson) must convince his men that fighting is what they must do, even though they will probably die. This is their chance to show the English that they will not bow down to their tyranny. He reminds them that freedom is worth dying for.
1. President Thomas Whitmore – Independence Day (1996)
This is a truly great speech in which the President of the United States (Bill Pullman) rallies the forces he has left in order to fight aliens that have already wiped out a great deal of the world. Most of these men are young and inexperienced, but the president believes that they will succeed. He speaks of unity and not being consumed by petty differences. They must all join together or be annihilated. His words and the music make this an incredibly emotional moment, which is why I believe it is one of the greatest movie speeches.
