Tom Cruise Shares First Look at ‘Top Gun’ Sequel

Fuel up the jets! It’s time to head back to the Danger Zone because the Top Gun sequel is finally underway!
Tom Cruise, who notoriously played Naval fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the original 1986 film, tweeted out a teaser photo today announcing that Top Gun: Maverick had officially begun production.

The photo shows Cruise all suited up looking back at a fighter jet as one of the original movie’s most famous tag lines “feel the need” is displayed. He captioned the photo #day1 and tagged Skydance Media and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Top Gun: Maverick will find Cruise as an instructor at The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School where he will most likely be dealing with some cocky hotshots like he was himself back in the day. There haven’t been any other casting announcements made yet, but Cruise has assured fans that the sequel will definitely feel like the beloved original.
“It’s going to be a competition film like the first one, and it’s going to be in the same vein and the same tone as the first with the need for speed and big, fast machines….there’s gonna be jets,” he told Access Hollywood last year.
The original film was a resounding success, earning over $350 million at the box office and winning the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Take My Breath Away”. Returning to the world of Top Gun had always been the plan for Paramount Pictures, but after original director Tony Scott passed away, the project was shelved for some time. Last year though, while out promoting The Mummy, Cruise shared that the project was back on the table and was met with an outpouring of support from fans.
There’s also no word yet as to whether or not that iconic volleyball scene will be reimagined, but we can only hope. Top Gun: Maverick soars into theaters July 2019.
