The defamation trial between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard will resume Thursday, when the final day of rebuttals takes place. Both sides are expected to present their final witnesses and closing arguments on Friday.
On Wednesday, Depp returned to the witness stand in Fairfax County, Virginia’s courtroom as a rebuttal witness. He labeled his ex-wife’s allegations of sexual and physical abuse “insane.”
“Ridiculous, humiliating, ludicrous, painful, savage, unbelievably brutal, cruel and all false,” Depp said when asked about his reaction to hearing Heard’s allegations when she testified earlier in the trial.
The actor concluded his testimony by denying each of the charges.
“I have never in my life committed sexual battery, physical abuse, all these outlandish, outrageous stories of me committing these things,” he said. “And living with it for six years, and waiting to be able to bring the truth out.”
On Wednesday, supermodel Kate Moss testified and denied that she had ever been pushed or assaulted by Depp during the course of their relationship.
The jury has already heard from both Depp and Heard. They both testified for four days. It was tough for them, but they answered all the questions.
The actress who starred in Aquaman finished her testimony in defense of herself by saying that Depp sexually and physically abused her. Depp has denied all the allegations throughout his own testimony.
“I struggle to find the words to describe how painful this is,” Heard said during her testimony weeks ago. “This is horrible for me to sit here for weeks and relive everything.”
Heard said that drugs and alcohol, as well as paranoid jealousy, turned him from the man she loved into a monster. She said he hid his drug and alcohol use from her and his family, but his behavior showed that he was high or drunk often to the point of incoherence.
Depp has said that he was the victim of violence from his ex-wife. Heard constantly berated and attacked him during their short-lived marriage, according to Depp. He has also said that he never physically attacked Heard, and that she routinely hit him and threw things at him throughout their relationship.
This is the last week of the month-long trial that started on April 11th.
The trial is being held in Fairfax County because Heard’s lawyers wanted it to be in California. But the judge said that Depp had the right to have it in Virginia because the Washington Post’s computer servers for its online edition are located here. Depp’s lawyers say they brought the case here partly because the laws are more favorable to their case.
The closing arguments will be on Friday, May 27. After the closing arguments, the jury will begin to deliberate.
