Today, YouTube Red released the continuation of 80’s pop culture classic, The Karate Kid. The new series, Cobra Kai has Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) once again facing off against his nemesis Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). It has been 34 years since Daniel delivered the infamous crane kick necessary to defeat Johnny and win the championship at The All Valley Karate Tournament. Moving foward we are left to wonder if adult Johnny still holds onto the shame he endured. If the Cobra Kai trailers have been any indication, it seems he just might.
Rivalries aside, both Macchio and Zabka are thrilled to continue their character’s journey. The two stars sat down with hosts Savannah Guthrie and Willie Geist to talk about their Karate Kid comeback on The Today Show, although Mr. Macchio indicated they’re more “Karate Adults” now. Mr. Zabka even humorously admitted that age was indeed a factor when he said, “There’s a lot more stretching now”.
“It’s kind of a nice, smart way in,” said Macchio. “These creators … wrote ‘Hot Tub Time Machine’ and the ‘Harold and Kumar’ franchise (and) they had a fresh take on how to write for the ‘now’ generation. They are the biggest ‘Karate Kid’ fans.’ … It’s ‘Star Wars’ to them.” – Source: The Today Show
