Netflix recently announced that one of Canada’s most beloved series and characters is getting her own show, ‘Anne’, that will stream sometime in 2017. An ‘Anne of Green Gables’ miniseries aired on PBS in the mid-1980’s starring Megan Follows as Anne and Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla, was the series first screen adaptation. Now Netflix, along with CBC is reviving this classic story again.

Originally a series of books written by Lucy Maude Montgomery, ‘Anne of Green Gables’ is the story of a young orphaned girl who ends up living with an elderly brother and sister on a farm in Prince Edward Island, Canada. The story is set in the late 1800’s, and tells the tale of Anne Shirley who spent the majority of her childhood moving from one abusive foster home to another, until she is mistakenly adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. In time, they decide to keep her and it sets off one adventure after the next for the red-headed spitfire.

In a recent press release, Netflix says that the story will pay homage to the original series, yet explore new territory with Anne and her bosom friends she makes along the way. The first season will consist of eight, one-hour episodes, written by Moira Walley-Beckett, and a two-hour pilot being directed by Niki Caro.

Anne Shirley is by far one of the greatest literary characters ever created, and was a personal hero of mine growing up. She was fearless, intelligent, and didn’t take anyone’s crap. Anne Shirley taught me how to dream big, and that if you work hard, you can accomplish every one of your dreams. She is a strong-willed, adventurous and independent woman in a time when women weren’t supposed to be. Having her be introduced to another generation is yet another bright spot in Netflix’s future, and I cannot wait to be reunited with an old friend.

I was lucky enough to get to visit the places described in the book series, and even where the show filed on Prince Edward Island in Canada. It truly was a magical place, and one can easily see how you get wrapped up into Anne’s journey. The landscape of PEI is something that should be shared and treasured, and it adds a layer of beauty to this story enough to become a character itself.

Take a look at the original mini-series trailer to get to Anne Shirley a little better, and I guarantee she will become a kindred spirit for life.

‘Anne’ will air on CBC and stream on Netflix in 2017.
