Every once in a while, a film comes along that just breaks the mold in comparison to all other films. In the 1990s, one such film was, without a doubt, The Shawshank Redemption.

The film is highly-regarded by many as one of the top best movies of all time by fans and critics, and as it turns out, star Tim Robbins agrees. In a recent interview with Variety, Robbins reminisced about the critical-acclaim which has followed the film since it’s 1994 debut. The positive reception didn’t surprise him at all. In fact, Robbins reveals that when he read the script, he knew that the film was going to be something truly special and amazing. He told Variety:

[row]“It did take me by surprise when it first happened,” Robbins said in reference to the film’s popularity. “I thought the film was really great. I thought the script was the best script I’ve ever read, and I thought there was a great movie made of it. To have that kind of recognition and acknowledgment by so many people — it’s one of those bucket list things. It takes a lot of pressure off of you.”[/row]

Directed by Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead), the film featured a stellar cast lead by the likes of Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. The Shawshank Redemption tells Stephen King’s twisted story of Andy Dufresne (Robbins), a man who is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover. Regardless of his innocence, he finds himself in one of the toughest prisons imaginable. During his 19 years of incarceration, he forms a friendship with Red (Freeman), experiences brutality of prison life, but seemingly adapts to his newly forced life behind bars. All the while, he never lost hope of freedom and never stopped plotting to escape, which he ultimately does in one of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history.

Personally, The Shawshank Redemption ranks easily within my top 5 (maybe even top 3) favorite films of all time. It’s a movie that you can watch over and over again and that provided us with so many great quotes such as, “Get busy living, or get busy dying.” Or, “Hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” A true cinematic masterpiece that retains its timeless relevancy, even all these years later.
