It was tough to figure out which film to highlight for today’s Throwback Thursday. However, we decided we were looking for a movie that just makes you feel good and so we bring you Sister Act. The movie is celebrating 25 years and we’re not sure how anyone can watch this movie and not get the urge to sing along!
The movie is based on a lounge singer from Reno named Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi Goldberg), who accidentally becomes witness to a murder by her mobster boyfriend Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keital.) For her safety, the authorities put her into witness protection. Unfortunately, that means she must disguise herself as a nun, Sister Mary Clarence.
There are some hilarious moments as Sister Mary Clarence adjusts to life in a convent. In order to take a break from the daily chores and all that praying, she sneaks out at night. However, she doesn’t realize that Sister Mary Patrick (Kathy Najimy) and Sister Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena) are following her and they all end up at the local bar. Mother Superior (Maggie Smith) catches them on their way back and as punishment she makes Deloris join the church choir. Deloris uses her experience as a lounge singer to turn their abysmal church choir into a singing sensation which not only draws in local parishioners but also the Pope.
When Deloris’s location is ultimately discovered, she obtains a little help from her fellow sisters which makes it very difficult for the mobsters. The tunes are fun and the chemistry among the cast is fantastic. This is one of those movies that always puts a smile on my face and inevitably leaves me singing “I Will Follow Him” for about an hour after watching the movie!
