Throwback Thursday: ‘Happy Days’

With the tragic passing of Erin Moran on this past Saturday, April 22, it seemed fitting to honor one of her most well-known TV shows, Happy Days, for this week’s Throwback Thursday post.

Who remembers this intro theme song?

“These happy days are yours and mine…”

The show originally aired in the 1970’s and was set in Milwaukee during the mid-1950s to 1960’s. The program centered on a teen, Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) and his family – his father Howard (Tom Bosley), mother Marion (Marion Ross), and sister Joanie (Erin Moran). It also included the growing bond between the middle-class family and their local ladies’ man tenant, Arthur “Fonzie” (Henry Winkler) and his younger cousin, Charles “Chachi” (Scott Baio).

Over the years there were multiple casting changes however, Fonzie became one of the most popular and well known characters.

The show ran for eleven seasons and became one of the longest running prime-time sitcoms in ABC’s history. In addition to its own success in syndication, it spawned several spin-offs such as Laverne & Shirley, Mork & Mindy, and Joanie Loves Chachi.

The popularity of the show was so great that it even served as the setting for Weezer’s 1994 “Buddy Holly” music video.  With some clever digital editing, the video placed the band in the center of Arnold’s Drive-In where they performed their popular song. The cast of Happy Days was seamless edited in to appear as if Weezer was actually on an episode of the show.
