We are absolutely smitten by the cast of This Is Us, and while that hardly comes as news to anyone, the cast is making news again today as they found a way to give back to their fans, once again. When a television show means as much to its fans as This Is Us does, there’s already a base of a lot of compassion and love between them.

The show is about families, how they work together, how they love together, and also how they get torn apart and are forced to rebuild as a unit and as individuals. The show deals with love and loss, highs and lows in everything from careers to relationships, and what it means to be there for someone unconditionally. Unconditional love and support is something that runs deep in all families, but especially those military families.

Recently, Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Chrissy Metz, Justin Hartley, Chris Sullivan and Susan Kelechi Watson came together to visit the joint base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. The base houses the United States Air Force’s McGuire Air Force Base, the United States Army’s Fort Dix and the United States Navy’s Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst – the bases merged in 2009.

The cast had lovely things to say about the experience and how it was an honor to be invited to the base to spend time with the military members. Kelechi Watson started by saying that they jumped at the opportunity.

‘It’s really such an honor to even be invited to be here. We jumped at the opportunity to do it.

Mandy Moore said they don’t get opportunities like this but that it was super exciting.

We don’t get opportunities like this. This is all new territory and it is super exciting, and it’s fun for us to get to meet people and see how this joint base operates.

Milo Ventimiglia, who has already been on two USO tours, had a special connection with the experience and the members of the military. His tours have taken him to Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Germany and Turkey.

Service members are out every day, giving everything. It’s the smallest and easiest thing to do to recognize the great work that all of our service members do for us. So, to show up, shake some hands, hold some babies is awesome.

Chrissy Metz also had a special connection as her father was in the military when she was a child. She knew what it was like to grow up in a military family.

We get to live our dreams and the only way we could do that is if we have freedom and security of our country. So … to even see how all of this is run, is such a gift that we get to provide and hopefully we get to bring entertainment to service members and military families.

Justin Hartley was especially moved by the experience and that it was nice to be able to smile and laugh with people who are constantly working to protect our safety.

It’s wonderful to be here and be able to look our service men and women in the eye and say, ‘Thank you for your service’ and have them smile and be excited. They work so hard. It seems like they are always working and to see them check out in their minds just for a second and interact with us and have fun and laugh. It feels good.’

We adored the cast of This Is Us before, but now, we’ve got an even more special place in our hearts for them. To see more you can visit People for the exclusive.
