After what seems like an eternity waiting for the longest pregnancy ever, in the upcoming ninth season of The Walking Dead, fans will finally get to see Maggie and Glenn’s baby for the first time.
While many had been waiting for Lauren Cohan’s character Maggie to show signs of being pregnant, thanks to the season’s time jump, it looks like the series will be skipping Maggie’s pregnancy altogether. In fact, on Sunday night’s season nine preview special, Cohan spoke about Maggie and Glenn’s baby being a major focal point for her character in the upcoming season. The baby will be about a year old, and Cohan also officially revealed the name of the baby which should make fans of the comics very happy.
In the interview, Cohan said:
[row]”We have baby Hershel, named after dad, and a big part of what Maggie is focusing on is building a world for him. A big part of her conflict this year is finding peace of mind with allowing Negan to live, and being a good leader, a good mother, and how she’s going to let those two desires co-exist, essentially.”[/row]
That’s right, baby Hershel! Just like in The Walking Dead comics, Maggie will be naming her baby after her late and beloved father Hershel Greene (played by Scott Wilson on the series). Hershel played a big part in both Maggie and Glenn’s (played by Steven Yuen) lives, so of course, it makes sense that she would honor him this way. Doesn’t that just hit you right in the feels?
In a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Cohan joked about her seemingly never-ending pregnancy by explaining the length of a gestation period in the zombie apocalypse. She said, “It’s somewhere between eighteen and nineteen years for the first trimester.” She then went on to explain that, perhaps her pregnancy never showed because, well, science! Cohan said, “I figured there’s not that much nutrition in the apocalypse, so you end up taking a lot longer to actually grow a baby. And no one can disprove this because we haven’t had an apocalypse yet.”
In addition to having a new baby onboard on The Walking Dead, season nine will bring about several massive changes. Series star Andrew Lincoln (who plays Rick Grimes) confirmed his speculated exit from the series was, in fact, happening. Additionally, Cohan’s future on series is in question as she has begun working on her new show, ABC’s Whiskey Cavalier. In a recent interview, Cohan commented that Maggie’s story is still open-ended. She said, “I’m so grateful that this has been my stomping ground for so long, and my family here is never gone. Maggie’s story is open-ended.” Both Cohan and Lincoln are said to appear in just six episodes in the upcoming season, but fans will have to wait and see what will become of their favorite characters.
The Walking Dead will return to AMC with new episodes starting on October 7th.
