The Walking Dead: Halt the Movies! Was a Rick Grimes & Michonne Spinoff Just Confirmed?

The Walking Dead is heading into the last segment of a three-part final season.  Along with last week’s announcement that filming is now complete, there have been several spinoffs announced that will premiere next year. The biggest thing that fans have been waiting on are the Rick Grimes movies, starring Andrew Lincoln.  These were announced nearly three years ago when Lincoln departed the show.  Now, with the series ending, did one of The Walking Dead‘s stars just confirm a Rick Grimes series instead of the films?

According to an interview on Twitter, The Walking Dead star, Ross Marquand (Aaron), responded to a fan’s question that his understanding is that there will be a Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira) spin0ff series.  Check out the tweet below.

Now, this doesn’t eliminate the possibility of the Rick Grimes movie trilogy but this news has to get fans excited! Many fans departed The Walking Dead at the same time Lincoln left the show. Ratings plunged and viewership numbers fell below two million viewers per episode.  (Remember when The Walking Dead brought in 15 million viewers?)

The Walking Dead is already setting up some other great duos for their own spinoffs.  Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) are headed off on their own adventures in the newly-announced Isle of the Dead. The show will follow the pair as they head to Manhattan (New York) and find out how the world of the walkers has affected the city.

Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) are also getting their own team-up series.  The show does not have a working title yet but it was announced nearly two years ago that the duo would ride off into the wilderness on their own.  Hints about the show have it sound like a blend of The Walking Dead and Reedus’ Ride with Norman Reedus, which follows Reedus on his motorcylcle adventures with various celebrities across the globe.

AMC hasn’t confirmed or commented on Marquand’s statement about a Rick and Michonne spinoff.  AMC has also been very tight-lipped on the status of the Rick Grimes films, other than to still confirm that they are happening.

Lincoln was spotted in Atlanta during the final week of filming of The Walking Dead, so it is possible Rick Grimes will make an appearance in the show’s final episode.  However, the cast is known to return to Atlanta when characters are killed or it’s the end of a run for a character. For the show to be at the end of it’s own run, it is possible that Lincoln and many other past actors all returned to celebrate the show’s ending.

What are your thoughts on a Rick and Michonne spinoff? Would that get you to return to watch The Walking Dead? Let us know in the comments below!
