The Walking Dead star Jeffrey Dean Morgan, known for his brash, charismatic Negan, is taking on a new role.  This one just doesn’t mess with zombies.  This one messes with the devil.  Morgan plays a disgraced journalist in new horror movie The Unholy, which has just debuted its first trailer.

Morgan is also known for his role on Supernatural, which does deal with more haunting things.  Morgan’s new film is an adaptation from author James Herbert (based on the late author’s 1983 novel Shrine).  This film follows Morgan’s character,Gerry Fenn, as he discovers a demonic presence amid a ‘miraculous’ event involving what is believed to be the Virgin Mary.

Produced by Sam Raimi for Sony Pictures, The Unholy follows a young girl with a hearing impairment named Alice, whose senses appear to allow her to heal the sick.

“As word spreads and people from near and far flock to witness her miracles, a disgraced journalist hoping to revive his career visits the small New England town to investigate,” teases the official synopsis.

“When terrifying events begin to happen all around, he starts to question if these phenomena are the works of the Virgin Mary or something much more sinister.”

The film also stars Bill & Ted actor William Sadler, Legion‘s Katie Aselton and The Princess Bride‘s Cary Elwes.
