‘The Walking Dead’ Fans Blame Showrunner for Loss of Beloved Character

Do not read further unless you have seen the most recent episode of The Walking Dead: How It’s Gotta Be.

UPDATE: The petition mentioned below has reached 20,000 signatures since this article was published.

There has been a lot of buzz this week surrounding The Walking Dead and the mid-season finale reveal that shocked everyone.

In the episode, titled How it’s Gotta Be, Carl Grimes reveals that he has been bitten by a walker somewhere along his journey the last two episodes, and is going to be dying soon.

The Walking Dead has obviously killed off several characters in the past. They’ve all been as beloved as the last-but this time, it’s different. Many reasons are being given for this difference. The main one is that Carl is supposed to be the lone survivor. He is the character that remains in the comics, and he was going to be the link from the beginning of the apocalypse to the end.

Above this, fans have now turned their focus onto the writers of the show, specifically, Scott Gimple. He is the current show runner, and has made the main storyline choices for seasons 5,6, 7 and now 8. Over this time, the show’s rating have fallen, and even though not everything has caused such backlash, it seems everything the fans want to see from the show has been deviated from.

They have actually started a petition to have Gimple fired from the show, and the petition has already gained over 11,000 signatures and counting in favor of having him removed. Here is a snippet from that:

Carl is still alive in the comic series and has gone on to play a pivitol role in every major conflict the group has faced. Some fans even speculated that he would do this in the TV show, being the last survivor in the apocalypse. A lot of fans have taken to social media to express their dissagreement with Gimples decision. Others have also expressed their feelings toward his decision calling for his immediate resignation. This petition is meant to bring AMC TV into the spotlight and fire The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple for his actions and unfair treatment of actor Chandler Riggs.

If AMC does choose to remove Scott Gimple from his role, it would go along with the recent overhaul of The Walking Dead‘s sister show, Fear The Walking Dead. They are getting ready to blow fans away next season with a star-studded cast consisting of Walking Dead‘s Lennie James, Jenna Elfman, Maggie Grace and Kevin Zegers. Not only that, but they’ve switched up its show runners, bringing in Once Upon a Time‘s Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg in to take over. Gimple is also signed on to executive produce.

Do you agree with the fans who have created this petition? Do you think bringing in some new writers to breath fresh air into The Walking Dead will make it what it once was for fans?

We want to hear your thoughts.
