‘The Walking Dead’: Daryl Broke Negan Out of His Jail Cell?

The Walking Dead fans have been chanting, “Free Negan,” and they finally received their wish as Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is now on the roam with Alpha (Samantha Morton) the Whisperers. How’d Negen get free? Well it may just be that Daryl (Norman Reedus) let him out.

In “Silence the Whisperers,” Negan was briefly tried for accidentally killing Margo (Jerri Tubbs) when he rescued Lydia (Cassady McClincy). When reporting the incident to Michonne (Danai Gurira), Daryl told her Negan was “on the right side this time.”

Negan was taken before the counsel for a decision on his fate, when Daryl, who was acting in Michonne’s place, said, “Lydia said Negan saved her, so he saved her. I’m a no.”  The counsel was voting to decide what would happen with Negan and Daryl’s vote created a tie.

However, before the final vote occurred, Gabriel discovered that Negan’s cell was empty.

But who could have done it?  With the uncertainty of Negan’s fate, Daryl is the most likely culprit.  But why? Negan needs complete and total reconciliation for the deaths of Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) and Glenn (Steven Yeun).  What better way to accomplish that than killing Alpha?  Also, sending Negan after Alpha may also be the only thing that prevents Carol (Melissa McBride) from following through on her suicide mission to kill the leader of the Whisperers.  Daryl, knowing this, willingly sends Negan on his way to infiltrate the group.

If not Daryl, who else would have any motivation to let Negan out other than possibly Lydia?

Despite the history between Daryl and Negan, Reedus hinted Daryl is open to Negan’s realignment as a potential ally:

“I don’t think Daryl holds grudges. I think he’s seen everybody do bad stuff, come back around, and redeem themselves however it’s appropriate at that time and space,” Reedus said on Talking Dead.

“If he’s gonna punch him in the face, he’d just punch him in the face. I don’t think he’d be like, ‘Are you a good guy now, or are you a bad guy now?’ That’s not how Daryl thinks. If Lydia says that Negan protected her, I believe her. So I think my only plan to go forward with that is to go look him in the face and see if he’s lying to me. But if he’s not lying to me, that means all these other people are in the wrong. And if he’s telling the truth, good on him.”

Reedus also teased the team-up back at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

“I think there’s a mutual understanding between those two characters. I think they might need each other at some point,” Reedus said at San Diego Comic-Con.

“It’s such a weird world, ‘cause some of the bad guys are the good guys, and the good guys are the bad guys, and everybody thinks they’re doing the right thing. I mean, we’ve all killed people. We’ve all done crazy things, so maybe there will be a time where we need him.”

  1. Negan was freed by that young savior boy, Brandon. He was a child when Negan ruled and was waiting for “The good old days”. Brandon said he couldnt go back after what he did to help Negan.
