Top Gun: Maverick continues to amaze at the box office both at home and abroad, having crossed $900 million in less than four weeks, and it’ll surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness within a matter of days to become 2022’s top grossing hit.
In the last few weeks, we’ve seen the Jurassic World dinosaurs and Lightyear’s Pixar-inspired escapades attempt to dethrone Joseph Kosinski’s sequel, with Maverick slipping down the rankings behind those aforementioned blockbusters.
In the race to come out on top, Cruise is competing against Elvis Presley, a prospect we never thought we’d utter aloud. With Baz Luhrmann’s lavish epic projected to gross $30 million in its opening weekend, Pete Mitchell’s return to the skies is hoping for a similar number.
There’s really no way of knowing how the top three finishers in this race are going to finish come Sunday, as they’re all expected to earn between $25 and $29 million. Elvis may win first place or fall as low as fourth, while Maverick has a similar chance of finishing first.
It is undeniable that they are both in the running for next year’s Academy Awards’ Best Picture candidates, so this is simply the beginning of a long-term conflict between them.
