The Russo Brothers on Thanos’ Hunt for the Infinity Stones

Fans of Avengers: Infinity War have been dreading the presence of Thanos for some time now. His evil runs deep through his veins and is evident in all of his actions. While it was recently mentioned that he does, in fact, have a heart somewhere; it doesn’t mean that we’re going to see it anytime soon.

So while the Russo brothers spoke about both his heart and his evil, it’s the latter that stands out to fans. He’s the reason that the Avengers are facing their toughest battle yet, and the reason that we’ll likely lose some of the heroes as we know them.

Joe Russo spoke with comicbook.com about what we should be expecting when the film premieres. It’s not a case of the heroes finding out that Thanos is searching for the Infinity Stones so much as an attack on the Avengers because he already knows where they’re hiding. It means more direct battle but also gives hope that the Avengers aren’t totally fighting blindly.

‘It’s a key driver to the movie. We have quite a few McGuffins in this movie that have different relationships to different people. Doctor Strange is the bearer of an infinity stone. He has been charged with protecting that infinity stone. There are a lot of characters that will come into direct conflict with Thanos.’

It’s more serious than ever before. His drive is to get all of the Infinity Stones and he’s pushing forward like there’s nothing in the world that can stop him.

‘So Thanos decides to do it, he really goes for it, and he’s kind of one step ahead of our heroes during the movie, and he puts them through a lot of pain, I guess, in the process of that.’

Anthony Russo added that his level of evil mirrors that of Darth Vader. Only, you’d have to multiply him by quite a lot to really achieve what Thanos is working with.

‘If you took Darth Vader, and you multiplied him times ten..Our job with Thanos is to make him the preeminent villain in the Marvel universe. That is his role in the comics, that’s his role in these movies, and in order to be a preeminent villain, you have to do some pretty bad things.’

So what we’re getting out of that is to buy some tissue before we see the movie. Got it.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27th.
