‘The Notebook’: A Musical Adaptation is in the Works

We all love Nicholas Sparks films, especially The Notebook. It’s the perfect romantic movie to cry along to. Now, a musical adaptation is in the works.

The Notebook tells the love story of Noah and Allie, beginning with their first meeting during a lustful summer through the trials imposed on them by class differences in North Carolina. As an elderly couple seeks to learn from their story, we all learn about the obstacles love can overcome—and those it can’t. A 2004 film adaptation of the 1996 novel starred Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.

Ingrid Michaelson is composing the score for a musical adaptation of The Notebook. She announced the project this week on The Today Show when she co-hosted with Hoda Kotb.

“I haven’t been able to talk about it because we’ve been in negotiations,” Michaelson said. “I’ve been writing for about a year and a half, so it’s been a long process for me.”

The adaptation will feature a book by Bekah Brunstetter, a writer and producer on NBC’s This Is Us, The Cake and The Secret. Kevin McCollum and Kurt Deutsch will produce in association with Sparks.

“I am thrilled to work with Bekah and Ingrid in order to make ‘The Notebook’ a reality on Broadway,” Sparks said in a statement. “They are amazingly talented, and obviously, the story is near and dear to my heart.”

There is no word on a cast list yet.
