‘The Legend of Zelda’ Movie Reportedly Coming from Universal Studios

Exciting news may be on the horizon for fans of The Legend of Zelda franchise as reports suggest that Nintendo and Universal are collaborating on a cinematic adaptation.

Universal’s animation studio, Illumination, achieved tremendous success earlier this year with The Super Mario Bros Movie, which has already surpassed a billion dollars in global box office earnings. Given this triumph, it is only natural for the creators to capitalize on the video game movie renaissance by exploring another one of Nintendo’s flagship franchises.

The reports about a Zelda movie originated from Jeff Sneider’s podcast, The Hot Mic. Sneider was informed about an impending deal between Nintendo and Illumination:

“I’m told that Universal is, in fact, closing a ‘big deal’ with the Nintendo corporation for The Legend of Zelda […] Zelda is looking like the next big Illumination-Nintendo franchise, which we were all sort of expecting. I’m told that is happening.”

Sneider further mentioned that such an adaptation would require a significant investment from Universal, describing it as costing a “pretty penny.”

Considering the immense success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it seems like an obvious choice to bring the franchise to life with the renowned Illumination treatment.

As a fan who has thoroughly enjoyed Tears of the Kingdom during my leisure time, I am particularly thrilled about the prospect of a Zelda movie. While I struggled to beat the challenging Zelda games from the ’90s during my childhood, I always recognized Link as one of gaming’s most iconic characters. Needless to say, if this project comes to fruition, I cannot contain my excitement to witness the magic of Zelda unfold on the big screen.
