The ‘Joker 2′ Theory Is Fascinating, Explaining Why It Will Be a Musical

Even if Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix danced around the subject every time it was broached, there was always an air of inevitability surrounding a Joker sequel, even when it became the most lucrative R-rated film ever and then proceeded to become a major force during award season.

Nobody was shocked when the director said he’d written a sequel to Joker called Joker: Folie à Deux, but the next major revelation can’t be denied. Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn in an R-rated psychological comic book musical thriller revolving around the Clown Prince of Crime sounds completely and totally insane, even if it hasn’t done much to dispel those ongoing comparisons between Phillips’ ambitions and filmography of Martin Scorsese.

It certainly caught everyone off guard, but a new Reddit theory has proposed an intriguing explanation for how Joker 2 might transform itself into an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza without compromising the original movie’s aesthetic.

When you think about it, the longer you consider it, the more sense it makes for Gaga to be referred to as Dr. Harleen Quinzell and turn into Joker accomplice with her transformation happening entirely inside Arthur Fleck’s mind. It’s effectively the same as Zazie Beetz’ “love interest” Sophie Dumond in the opening installment, albeit with a twist perfectly in keeping with the world Phillips and Phoenix created the first time around, which would then allow Folie à Deux to take things in even stranger directions.
