Netflix is attempting to create its own action series around The Gray Man. Netflix announced that Ryan Gosling and the Russo Brothers would return for a sequel, as well as a spin-off written by Deadpool‘s Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.
On Friday, The Gray Man debuted on Netflix and immediately became a hit with viewers. The film debuted at number one in 92 countries, despite negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it received an audience score of 91%.
The untitled sequel will also have writer Stephen McFeely returning. The Russos and AGBO’s Mike Larocca will produce with Joe Roth and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum for Roth Kirschenbaum Films. The spin-off will explore a different element of the The Gray Man universe, but Netflix offered no further details.
“The audience reaction to The Gray Man has been nothing short of phenomenal,” Joe and Anthony Russos said in a statement. “We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm that fans across the world have had for this film. With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for the Gray Man to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about soon.”
The Gray Man is based on Mark Greaney’s book and is Gosling’s first film in three years, following 2018’s First Man. Gosling plays a CIA black operations assassin who goes on the run after finding incriminating information about the organization. Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, and Rege-Jean Page star in the film, which was Netflix’s most expensive production at $200 million to make.
It is unclear if the movie sequel for The Gray Man will follow any of the stories that Greaney wrote as sequels. However, Joe Russo told Deadline that the movie sequel will be inspired by a Mark Greaney novel. Sometimes when something is translated to another medium, like a book to a movie, it requires some interpretation. However, they have a lot of material from an amazing offer to use for the movie sequel.
This isn’t the first time Netflix has announced that one of its hits will become a franchise. In 2017, Netflix high hopes for a Bright universe was reported after the 2017 Will Smith sci-fi film. However, in 2021, plans for a Bright sequel were abandoned following the release of an animated series.
Netflix was successful with Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. A direct sequel is still in development, and a prequel, Army of Thieves, has already been released. The anime series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas is also in the works.
