The Flash Recap ‘Borrowing Problems from the Future’
Having traveled to the future over Christmas and seen Iris killed by Savitar, Barry is grappling with what to do in order to save her. He is having nightmares about what he saw, but refuses to talk to anyone about it, believing it to be his responsibility.
Wally is finally suited up, but is shadowing Barry as he learns the ropes. They work well together and Wally is giddy about his future as a hero. However, there are those that doubt his abilities. Wally overhears the police talking about how he just stands by and lets the Flash do all the work.
When Barry arrives at the scene of a robbery and finds Jared Morillo, he doesn’t know what to do. In the future Barry experienced, the news report playing was about Morillo’s trial following his arrest by the Flash. Barry lets Morillo go. The future becomes even more clear as H.R. gives Morillo the name Plunder, which Barry also heard on the news report. When Morillo strikes again, Barry doesn’t want to take him in, but Wally shows up and does it for him. Barry is angry and scolds Wally, telling him that if he can’t follow orders, then he isn’t ready to wear the suit.
Meanwhile, Caitlin is having problems with the power suppression cuffs. The battery keeps dying, but she doesn’t want to have to take them off to recharge them. Her powers are becoming more and more powerful. She is afraid that she’ll go to bed and wake up as Killer Frost. Caitlin goes to Julian and asks for his help in getting rid of her powers. He tells her he’ll think about it.
H.R. is moving forward with the S.T.A.R. Labs Museum, but the soft opening doesn’t go so well as nobody shows up. Cisco keeps ragging on H.R., telling him they knew it would be a failure. He still thinks that the new Wells is useless to them. Julian is the only person who shows up to the event, but it was more to talk about joining the team than anything else. The others are hesitant to let him on board. Caitlin gives one of her famous speeches, saying that when hard times hit, it is foolish to go it alone. It is okay to admit you need help.
Barry takes this to heart and finally tells Iris the truth. He assures her that he will do everything in his power to make sure that she stays safe. They tell the rest of the team. Wally insists that they bring Joe into the loop, but Iris tells him no. Joe would go after Savitar himself if he knew she was in danger. They can’t have Joe being reckless. H.R. talks a bit about the future and how it is essentially set in stone. Like a set of dominoes tipping over, one event triggers another which triggers another and so on. But, if they can change the right events along the way, the final domino won’t be knocked over. Barry and Cisco decide to vibe to that night and figure out everything they can leading up to her death.
In the future, Barry and Cisco read off the scrolling text during the news report for the rest of Team Flash to record. They then watch as Iris is killed, but something is different. H.R. is on the rooftop with a gun. When Barry and Cisco return, they say that things have already changed now that Barry told them the truth. They look at the list they complied: Plunder apprehended by Flash, Music Maestro signs six figure book deal, city still reeling following gorilla attack, Killer Frost still at large, and S.T.A.R. Labs Museum closes.
Plunder has escaped from prison, and Barry enlists Wally’s help in order to stop him. If Kid Flash takes Morillo down, then they can alter the future. Wally is successful and that’s one event changed.
Team Flash finally decide to help H.R. with the museum and they have a successful opening. Later, Team Flash welcomes Julian, and he and Cisco create a new device to help Caitlin with her powers. It is a necklace that can be charged via solar power. Things are currently looking up.
The final scene of the episode is a breech opening and a woman coming through. She touches her wristwatch and an image of H.R. appears. Who is this woman? Is she from H.R.’s world? The credits have her listed as Gypsy. In the comics, Gypsy has the ability of illusion-casting. She can blend into the environment and become invisible. She can also project imagines into people’s minds, usually focusing on what the person fears most. Well, that’s interesting. Maybe what Barry saw in the future was only an illusion created by Gypsy.
The headlines give us a glimpse into what will be coming up in later episodes. It was announced a couple of weeks ago that the villain for the musical crossover episode with Supergirl would be Music Maestro and he was mentioned in the headlines. Interesting that he’s receiving a book deal when he’s a villain. Also mentioned is the return of Gorilla Grodd. I have been anxious for him to come back since he was last scene being thrown into a world ruled by gorillas. Another one is Killer Frost. Poor Caitlin. She can never catch a break. Hopefully with Julian a part of the team, they will be able to get her powers under control.
Next week’s episode is entitled ‘Dead or Alive.’
