The First Trailer for AHS: Cult is what Nightmares are Made Of

The opening credits for American Horror Story: Cult was released yesterday afternoon and fans immediately took to social media reacting to the footage. The clowns that we’ve seen in the teasers saturated the opening credits, there were masks of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, and enough blood and gore to thoroughly creep us out. Plus…that scene with the bug crawling out of the holes in someone’s skin…yikes!

In addition to the opening credits, details of the plot were given out today and it just makes the footage eerier. Fans are excited about the aspect that Evan Peters is playing his most involved season yet, but it’s going to be a season that pulls at a different kind of fear than ever before.

If you get people scared enough, they will set the world on fire.

The trailer begins in Michigan after election night results come in, and two characters have a very different response to the announcement of the winning presidential candidate.

It spurs a series of events that bring fear, deception, and clowns. Lots and lots of clowns. Sarah Paulson plays Ally Mayfair-Richards who spirals into a dark place ruled by her greatest fears after Trump wins the election. Her partner, Ivy Mayfair-Richards played by Alison Pill says they’ll get through this. However, it’s clear after the trailer rolls that it’s more than either of them expected, especially when it seems as if Ally is hallucinating, but knowing AHS, she’s most definitely not.

On the other side, Evan Peters plays Kai Anderson who is thrilled that Trump won and sets off to make Ally’s life hell. Part of his plan is getting Winter Anderson, played by Billie Lourd, to babysit Ally and Ivy’s child. However, Winter hates children and brings more clowns (and evil) into the home.

The fear deeply imbedded in this season is more real because, while elements will still be exaggerated, who isn’t scared of clowns and without getting political…fear did bloom in the hearts of people after the election. Murphy played off of those fears and built an entire season that’s going to surprise us, scare us, and hit a little too close to home.

AHS: Cult premieres on September 5th on FX.
