It’s official. The CW has found its new Batwoman. We’ve known for some time that Ruby Rose would not be returning as the titular character. We’ve also known that the CW was committed to hiring an LGBTQ+ actress to replace Ruby Rose. It would appear as though they kept their promises as it was announced yesterday who would be taking over. We now know that Javicia Leslie will be portraying Ryan Wilder in the upcoming second season of CW’s Batwoman.

Javicia Leslie, best known for her role in God Friended Me, will not be portraying Kate Kane but instead a completely new character who seems to have no basis in the Batwoman lore. The CW’s description for Ryan Wilder is as follows:

Ryan Wilder is about to become Batwoman. She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical all-American hero.

Leslia also had this to say in regards to her getting the role: “I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,”

Batwoman season 2 is slated for a January 2021 debut. Until then we’ll just have to speculate on Leslie’s new character!
