‘The Crown’ Star John Lithgow Thanks Fellow Nominees and Meryl Streep in Emotional SAG Awards Speech

At Sunday night’s SAG Awards, the nominee list for the best actor in a drama series category was made up of several incredibly talented stars but, it was The Crown’s John Lithgow who took home the top prize (for the full list of winners, click HERE).

Lithgow appeared to be holding back tears as he began his acceptance speech.  He began by saying, “I never would cast myself as Winston Churchill… [They] put me into a magnificent cast of about 50 wonderful English actors, led by our marvelous Claire Foy. These are the people who have delivered me up to this podium.”

Graciously, Lithgow continued on thanking Netflix, his wife, his fellow category nominees Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us), Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) and, then he thanked someone completely unassociated with The Crown and his category.  That person was Meryl Streep.

At the end of his speech, Lithgow said, “…and also a great, underrated actress. Who somehow managed to speak my exact thoughts three weeks ago in another awards ceremony. And that’s Meryl Streep.  Thank you so much!”

Lithgow was referencing Streep’s politically-toned acceptance speech from the Golden Globes which took place earlier this month.  Her speech led to a response from President Donald Trump via twitter calling the actress “overrated”.

While the SAG Awards definitely had a political vibe this year with many acceptance speeches and even award presenters using the night as an opportunity to voice opinions, Lithgow’s speech was definitely one of the more emotional moments of the night.
