In 1996 the world was introduced to four teenage girls at a Catholic prep school who not only were outcasts, but practiced magic. As the movie progresses they start doing more and more elaborate magic and start cursing anyone who even slightly upsets them. You learn that the first rule of witch club is you can’t leave! This movie started my life long fear or actress Fairuza Balk, she would later appear in American History X which also left me feeling very uncomfortable but in a completely different way. She most recently appeared in the acclaimed series Ray Donovan. Sony announced last year that they would be working on a remake of The Craft. Honeymoon writer and director Leigh Janiak is
set to co write with Phil Graziedi, Janiak will also direct.
In a recent interview with hitflix producer Douglas Wick said that the word remake didn’t do the project justice. “I wouldn’t say that we wouldn’t so much call it a remake as a ‘twenty years later.’ There will be callbacks to the original movie, so you will see there is a connection between what happened in the days of The Craft, and how these young women come across this magic many years later.” Wick is an accomplished producer who has worked such a wide spectrum of films, from Oscar winners like
Gladiator, to show stoppers like The Great Gatsby, and children’s movies like Stuart Little! Wicks also worked on the original 1996 movie so he had a little more incite on the upcoming movie,
“Here are some young women who once again discover the power of magic, and we explore their emotional lives, their wants, their fears, their longings, as they become empowered.”
I am glad they are not remaking the same story we have already scene, but also like with all remakes/sequels you have to go in with low expectations. If we can get a well crafted (haha) story and characters with a defiant nod to the feeling of the original I will be happy, I would be ecstatic if we got a cameo or two! What do you think will this just be another remake flop or do you think Sony has the capacity to pull it off?
Kyle was born and
raised a nerd, as a toddler she
would watch Batman on repeat and we are not
going to say that did something to her brain…but it might
have. These days she
is a TV/Movie junkie with a side of comic obsession. Now that she has found this
incredible outlet to share her nerdy perspective on movies and TV shows she can
stop pestering her
husband and animals with superhero business!
