Vice President-Elect Mike Pence visited New York City this week and, on Friday night, he took in a performance of Hamilton: An American Musical.

His presence at the theater was greeted with mixed reactions from the audience.  Many in attendance cheered as Pence walked in with his daughter, nieces and nephews while others booed the Vice President-Elect as he took his seat prior to the performance.  Word of his attendance quickly spread throughout social media and, as such, reached the cast and crew of the hit show.

At the end of the show, during curtain call, actor Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, America’s third Vice President, in the show, stepped up to center stage to announce there was a guest in the audience, Vice President-Elect Mike Pence.  He proceeded to deliver a special message directly to Pence.  In his message, on behalf of the cast, Dixon stated:

“Vice President-Elect Pence, I see you’re walking out, but I hope you will hear us just a few more moments.  There’s nothing to boo here, ladies and gentlemen.  There’s nothing to boo.  We’re all here sharing a story of love.  We have a little message for you, sir.  We hope that you will hear us out….  Vice President-Elect Pence, we welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical.  We really do.  We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our friends, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir.  But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.  All of us.  We truly thank you for sharing this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men, women of different colors, creeds and orientation.  We don’t have to agree, but we have to live here.”

The message was powerful, respectful and, most of all, one filled with hope for a brighter future for ALL Americans.  Check out the video below posted to the Twitter account of Hamilton: An American Musical.
