‘The Big Bang Theory’ Nobel Prize shoutout

The 2019 Nobel Prize winners were announced this week. During the physics announcement, a familiar anthem was referenced- the opening lyrics to the The Big Bang Theory’s theme song.

“Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state, then nearly 14 billion years ago expansion started,” said academy member Ulf Danielsson at the presentation in Stockholm.

The Big Bang Theory, which wrapped in May concluded with two of the main characters, Sheldon(Jim Parsons) and Amy(Mayim Bialik), winning the physics prize. The show debuted in 2007 on CBS and revolved around a group scientists. Sheldon’s goal from the beginning was to win a Nobel Prize.

Goran Hansson, secretary general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, said the TV show was a “fantastic achievement” that brought the “world of science to laptops and living rooms around the world.” Referencing its theme song therefore seemed fitting, he added.

This year’s winners include a Canadian-American cosmologist James Peebles and Swiss scientists Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz. They received the award for their ground-breaking work in astronomy, focusing on the evolution of the universe and discovering planets orbiting distant suns.

“This year’s Laureates have transformed our ideas about the cosmos. While James Peebles’ theoretical discoveries contributed to our understanding of how the universe evolved after the Big Bang, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz explored our cosmic neighbourhoods on the hunt for unknown planets. Their discoveries have forever changed our conceptions of the world,” read the press release on their work.

Hansson said he hoped fans of the show liked how this year’s Nobel Prizes are handled.

“I hope that Sheldon and Amy are not too disappointed today,” he said.

It all started with a Big Bang!
