Supergirl Season 3 Recap: Supergirl vs. Reign

Previously, on Supergirl…

Kara faced off against her toughest adversary yet in the Worldkiller Reign, who was another infant sent away during the destruction of Krypton. The powers lay dormant inside of Sam until an accident caused her to use some of her super strength to save her daughter, Ruby. Sam, Lena, and Kara grew to be close friends, which made the situation even worse when they found out the truth about Reign. This also put a strain on the relationship between Lena and Supergirl, essentially ending their friendship. In order to defeat Reign and the evil Kryptonian cultists, Kara got some help from the Legion of Super-Heroes, who hailed from the future in order to stop one of the Worldkillers from becoming even more powerful and destroying the world to come. Led by Mon-El, they helped Kara defeat Reign’s sisters, Pestilence and Purity. Eventually, Kara was able to save Sam and defeat Reign.

Along the way, Kara discovered that her mother and a handful of Kryptonians were still alive. She and Mon-El stumbled across Argo, learning that her father died in order to keep the Kryptonians alive during the destruction of the planet. Kara struggled the entire season with her identity as Supergirl, and for the first time ever, she felt like she could be her true self in Argo City. When they think Reign has been defeated, Kara makes the decision to leave Earth and live with her mother and people on Argo. Reign makes her return, however, and Kara realizes that she has to go back to Earth. That is where she belongs.

Throughout the season, James also struggled with his own identity. He risked having the truth about Guardian revealed to the public, but realized that that was something that he wanted. He wanted young kids to look at him and go “that superhero looks like me.” So in the season finale, James held a press conference and revealed himself to the world. It will be interesting to see how things are going to play out for him now.

Also in the season finale, Mon-El is forced to choose between his duty as a member of the Legion of Super-heroes and Kara. He loves Kara with all his heart, but he has finally come into his own as a hero. Mon-El and Winn travel to the future to stop an evil that is turning the technology of the world against humanity. They leave between fellow Legion of Super-heroes member Brainiac-5, who would die if he returned home. He will stay on at the DEO and help out the new director of the organization, Alex. J’onn found and lost his father during the course of the season, and realized that he needs to allow himself some time to explore the world. He leaves everything to Alex, who is a bit hesitant to take up the position.
