This week’s episode found J’onn and Kara traveling to Mars to answer M’gann’s call for help while Alex and Maggie prepared themselves for a wedding shower extravaganza hosted by Eliza. The White Martian resistance has grown considerably, but M’gann is worried that the White Martians know the location of a sacred staff. If they get their hands on it, they can instantly wipe out the resistance. The only one who knows the location of the staff is a newly liberated Green Martian priest, who just so happens to be J’onn’s father, M’yrnn J’onzz. J’onn tries to speak to him, but he doesn’t believe that his son is alive. The White Martians are playing a trick on him. The resistance grows uneasy, saying that the only way to get the location is to break into M’yrnn’s mind. J’onn and Kara fight back and get M’yrnn away from them. J’onn takes his father to their home in an attempt to prove that he is who he says he is. After sharing a scene of his daughters with M’yrnn, he believes that his son has in fact returned. It’s an incredibly emotional scene.

Back on Earth, Eliza is throwing quite a party for Alex and Maggie, but things get a bit uneasy when the subject of Maggie’s family comes up. She tells the story of her father abandoning her when he learned that she liked girls. Alex says that it might be a good time to reach out to them, but Maggie isn’t too thrilled by the idea. Eventually, she does call her father and tell him that she is getting married. Carlos arrives without any notice, but their interactions are very tense. At the party, he shows up late, then quickly leaves. Maggie chases after him, asking what she has done to offend him. Carlos explains that they have always been outcasts because of their heritage and he fought to gain any respect. All he has ever wanted was a good life for his daughter away from all the prejudice, but her actions will only lead to further hate. Maggie thanks Carlos for coming to the party because he has given her the greatest gift. Now that she understands her father’s motivation, she can finally have some closer to that part of her life. Maggie says that she is happy in her own skin and she doesn’t need his approval. She is happy.

On Mars, the White Martians are performing a ritual around the staff, but Supergirl rides in in J’onn’s shapeshifting 1950’s Chevy Bel Air Convertible while blaring “Baby One More Time.” A fight breaks out between the White Martians and the resistance, ending in Kara taking the staff and blasting the White Martians out of existence. The resistance thanks them for everything, but say that they cannot keep the staff in their possession. It is too powerful. They ask Kara and J’onn to take it back to Earth and bury it. Kara and J’onn return home, but they aren’t alone. M’yrnn goes with them.

It was nice to see J’onn and Maggie highlighted this week, and the performances by David Harewood and Floriana Lima brought the emotion home. I am interested to see the ramifications of the events of this week, but am also wary that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the Martian staff. I also loved that Carl Lumby was cast as J’onn’s father. Lumby voiced the Martian Manhunter  in several DC animated series.

Next week’s episode is entitled ‘The Faithful.’
