‘Stranger Things’ Executive Producer Shawn Levy Teases a ‘Darker’ and ‘More Ambitious’ Second Season

Hold on to your eggos, Stranger Things fans!  Series executive producer Shawn Levy is teasing a bigger, darker and even more terrifying second season for the Netflix hit series.

In a Facebook Live interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Levy says that, “Season 2 makes the Demogorgon look quaint.”

As Entertainment Weekly first reported, the second season will pick up about a year after where the first season leaves off.  Will (played by Noah Schnapp) is seeing mysterious flashbacks to images from the Upside Down and he’s having some difficulty separating them from his reality.  Will’s mom, Joyce (played by Winona Ryder) is doing her best to keep everything normal for him but, at the same time, she has started dating an old high school classmate (played by Sean Astin).  In an effort to protect Joyce, Will and the kids, Sheriff Jim Hopper (played by David Harbour) is doing whatever he can to keep the crazy events they’ve all just experienced on the down low. But, perhaps the most interesting plot line of them all, EW confirmed that we will get to learn about Eleven’s (played by Millie Bobby Brown) backstory.

While this all sounds pretty tame in regards to the craziness that went on last season, Levy commented that the upcoming season is way more terrifying than the first.  Levy said:

“I was just in the edit room with the brothers yesterday, and we’re like, ‘This is definitely darker. I hope everyone’s down with this,’ because the threats to Hawkins and to our characters are bigger, darker, often times scarier, so people who found season 1 too scary for them, probably you’re going to be more scared by season 2. But again, the best thing I can tell you is that through it all, it’s got the best heart. But it is, cinematically and budgetary, it’s definitely more ambitious.”

In addition to the upcoming season being more ambitious, Levy did warn that season 2 does come with some disappointments.  For example, he confirmed that fan favorite character Barb (played by Shannon Purser) will not be returning.  Levy broke the news bluntly during the interview:

“I’ve had a lot of people, some huge celebrities, come up to me at these awards shows, like, ‘So, between us, Barb’s coming back, right?’ I’m like ‘No, you saw, she had like a creature, slug, worm, snake, coming out of her mouth. I don’t know that there’s a bounce back from that.  So no, we are not going to cravenly service the wish list of fans. We’re going to service the Duffer instincts and what they feel is the right story to tell.”

Bummer for Barb but, it certainly sounds like season 2 has some awesome thrills in store for fans!  You can watch the full interview from The Hollywood Reporter below.
