Star Wars: Mark Hamill Shares His Opinion on the New Luke Skywalker Actor

Mark Hamill’s final performance as Luke Skywalker was in 2019’s Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker, most people assumed to be his last appearance as the character. He reprised his role as Luke Skywalker in the sequel trilogy, and after his death in The Last Jedi, he resurrected as a Force Ghost for one final good-bye. We thought that would be his final appearance… and then Disney+ came along.
After being retired from acting, Mark Hamill has continued his career in voiceover work. He’s since made a digital resurgence with The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, and Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) created an eerily lifelike deep fake version of Luke. Despite the CGI quality, many fans have called for Lucasfilm to recast the role.
Feely will play the young Luke, who may be seen in the trailer being observed from a distance by Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan. Hamill praised Feely’s casting, stating that he “looks like a great Luke Skywalker” and wished him well:

It’s still unclear how big a role Feely will play in the new series. This week, we discovered that the initial idea for Obi-Wan Kenobi was for a “Lone Wolf and Cub” motif, in which the former Jedi General protects Luke as an infant from Darth Maul. Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau rightly complained that this scenario would be too much like The Mandalorian.
According to the trailer, the majority of the action will take place away from Tatooine, and since Luke resided there all throughout his youth (as far as we know), he won’t be along for the adventure. This implies Feely’s involvement may be limited, though Star Wars fans would want to see young Luke and Obi-Wan interacting at some point.
Obi-Wan Kenobi will air on Disney Plus on May 25.
