Star Wars: Lucasfilm Executive Discusses Disagreements Between J.J. Abrams & Lucasfilm on Sequels

Some Star Wars fans were disappointed that the planet Hosnian Prime, not Coruscant, served as the New Republic’s capital in The Force Awakens, with Lucasfilm Senior Vice President Pablo Hidalgo now explaining this was due to creative differences between director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm.

The Disney sequel trilogy’s shadow of controversy continues to linger. In fact, now that we’re seeing the last three installments in the Skywalker Saga as a whole, even The Force Awakens – which was liked by audiences and critics alike – isn’t immune to criticism.

Despite the fact that many people believe that J.J. Abrams’ film is a carbon copy of A New Hope, the narrative presented some interesting features. The destruction of the New Republic comes to mind as a great example. If the original Star Wars movie destroyed Alderaan in a daring act to demonstrate the Empire’s tyranny, The Force Awakens took things a step further by annihilating Hosnian Prime, the Republic’s new capital.

The director’s decision to simply demolish Coruscant apparently upset some people at Lucasfilm, forcing them to find a middle ground.

The executive’s comment is somewhat intriguing. It doesn’t make much sense for the First Order to try and destroy civilization’s central hub. As a makeshift capital for the New Republic and its fleet, however, Hosnian Prime is a totally different story.
