Great news, Trekkies! Thanks to the massive success of the first few episodes, CBS announced on Monday that Star Trek: Discovery has officially been renewed for a second season! The hit series will continue to stream on CBS All Access.
Marc DeVevois, president of CBS Interactive spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the early success of the series:
“In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise. This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the Star Trek legacy.”
Sources close to the production have said that showrunners Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg will also be returning for season 2 though this information is not confirmed.
After the premiere episode aired on CBS, the series fueled a record-breaking number of sign-ups for the premium streaming service, CBS All Access. It is not clear, however, how many subscribers signed up for the service or how many have actually watched the series. CBS has not released exact numbers on either account.
Star Trek: Discovery has been well received amongst fans and critics alike as it stays true to the Star Trek legacy while also providing groundbreaking additions to the series. The series stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Jason Isaacs, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, and Shazad Latif.
