We’ve been bombarded by reports claiming that Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the credits have finished to black on Avengers: Endgame.
It’s understandable on one hand, when he was the main figure in the Infinity Saga, as well as one of 21st century cinema’s most popular and iconic figures.
Whether it’s a multiversal cameo appearance, a voice role as the A.I. in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man costume, or a holographic version allowing him to appear from beyond the grave in features like Ironheart without compromising the thematic heft of his death, the hype machine will almost certainly continue to churn for some time.
During a recent interview, No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers addressed the issue. on The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith podcast, and It appears that Marvel has no plans for the brilliant billionaire playboy philantrophist to return.
“I think honestly that’s a non-starter in the halls of Marvel, at least in our experience. They just don’t really like constantly evoking [Iron Man]. I mean, obviously, Tony cast such a large shadow even after Endgame — which we dealt with in Far From Home — but I think everyone felt like we can’t just keep on going to the Tony well.”
With the MCU’s popularity continuing to skyrocket, the franchise is becoming less reliant on big names and well-known heroes, knowing full well that audiences will come in droves regardless. Downey Jr. doesn’t require the shared superhero series any longer, and it’s just as true for him.
