Sophie Turner on Preparing for her role in ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’

There are film roles in every genre that go down as iconic. Characters with stories to tell laced with truth or fiction, heroism or vulnerability, and often – a mix of both. This holds especially true in comic book stories with larger than life heroes and villains with complex backstories and personalities. We relate to the good guys and the bad, to what made them and what breaks them – those stories are an integrally woven part of the pop culture fabric.

It comes as no surprise that when actors and actresses get to take on these roles, they take them very seriously. One of those actresses is Sophie Turner who will bring Jean Grey’s struggle to the big screen in X-Men: Dark Phoneix.

Sophie recently spoke with EW about preparing for her role in the film. She shared the  While she admits that she’s nervous, she feels like they’ve created a film that the audience will respond to.

‘I’m so nervous. As you say, it’s one of the most iconic storylines so revered and popular. I guess the response to the third movie wasn’t great and there’s definitely a pressure to do it justice. I really believe in Simon Kinberg and I believe in all the work we did and I really really hope we did do it justice and I think we did but I hope the audience responds to it well.’

She went on to discuss ways she prepared for the role, and one of them was something she considered very important. Instead of going out and partying or staying out late while she was learning her character and shooting the film, she stayed in and went to bed early.

She said at first her producers were shocked, but it’s a choice she’s glad she made.

‘I think I had like two nights of proper partying and on a five-month shoot that’s not very much. It was funny the first night that I went to bed early we were all at like this big group dinner and I had to work the next day and I was like, ‘Guys it’s 9 p.m. and I really have to be in bed.’ All the producers were so shocked because they know me and they were like, ‘Are you okay?’ You only really get one shot at something like this. I was like ‘I cannot mess this up with a hangover.’

With the first look and Sophie’s passion, we think every decision she made will be obvious when we see her in the film next year. Are you looking forward to seeing X-Men: Dark Phoenix? Let us know.
