Can you imagine walking into a casting call and being liked so much that a role is made just for you? Now, take that one step further, and imagine walking into a casting call for one of the biggest shows on television and having that role made specifically for you.
Sonequa Martin-Green knows exactly how that feels and we have to say, no one deserves that more than her. She is a dedicated actress and her contribution to The Walking Dead as Sasha was incredible, however, she had a different role in mind when she first auditioned. She originally set out to take on the character of Michonne, but that role was given to Danai Gurira.
We can’t imagine Michonne being played by anyone else, and the same sentiment clearly stands true for Sasha. Both actresses bring strength, dedication, and a sense of compassion into the series, even with Sasha’s death, we believe hers will stick around for some time to come.
Sasha’s character being designed for Sonequa was revealed after Sharon Bialy and Sherry Thomas spoke to Insider recently. Baily explained that the producers loved her so much immediately that they had to have her on the series.
‘The producers fell in love with her so much they wrote her character for her. Glen Mazzara at the time said, ‘I’m gonna write something for her,’ and he really came through on his word.’
While her time in the series may seem short lived to some, her character arc was beautifully done and we can’t wait to see how she continues to impact the series.
Fans of The Walking Dead are also lucky in the sense that we’ll see Sonequa take on a starring role with Star Trek: Discovery soon, so we won’t have to miss her on our screens for long.
